In EDI Expert Video Series 3.0, IDEA's B2B EDI Solutions Manager Tom Guzik continues to explore the ins and outs of EDI. Intended as a guide to small IT teams making big decisions and changes, this series answers the questions about various aspects of EDI implementation, integration, and maintenance. In this episode, we discuss the role of EDI-related industry associations, and whether you need to be their active member.
Q: I have heard about various EDI-related industry associations and data standards. Are those important to me? Why?
A: Various EDI associations and standards groups that are out there are only important if you want them to be. If you are taking care of your EDI needs yourself, have your own department, are working with your trading partner and know their needs – then, essentially, you are working off of the standards that have come out of those industry groups. If you want to take a more proactive role and help forge the standards for your industry, or ensure that certain fields get included to become mandatory, then you might want to become an active member in one of those groups. But, that is not necessary. As long as you are able to comply with the industry guidelines and standards, it is fine if you are not that involved.
