Q: Should I invest in new servers and databases to host my EDI system?
A: I would say you should really consider what your long-term goals are for your EDI program. If you’re just going to be handling a small handful of trading partners, where the volume is only a couple hundred basic documents a week (e.g. purchase orders, invoices, etc.), then you most likely have enough room on your existing servers. If you don’t, you could easily contract with a hosted server provider that will give you the amount of server space that you need.
However, if you are going to grow your EDI program, it’s a good idea to invest in servers from the very beginning. Get a server that is compatible with your EDI software solution, because some of them are specific. For example, there are certain packages that will require a Windows-based environment, while others work on a Unix-based environment. So, knowing that information upfront is really important when you’re planning how to go about your long-term EDI strategy. It might turn out to be more cost-effective and beneficial to make the investment now rather than later, and put an environment in place that will allow for future growth and expansion.
