IDEA Dictionary: What is Excellence?

When dealing with data, and all related terminology, you may feel like you’re trying to speak a foreign language. In the interest of keeping things clear and simple, we will introduce commonly used terms that will help you navigate the data shorthand and learn the lingo. This week, we bring you: excellence.

IDEA’s Data Certification Program is an Industry Data Warehouse (IDW) initiative designed to measure the completeness and quality of transactional and descriptive product information available in the IDW at the item level. The first step in a manufacturer’s progress toward certification is achieving compliance. Compliance measures the population of all applicable critical data fields for a manufacturer’s eligible items in the IDW. The second step in the process toward certification is achieving excellence. Excellence measures the quality of the data within those complete and fully attributed critical fields and ensures the data’s accuracy and consistency.

To achieve excellence, an item must pass two quality checks:

  • Programmatic Check: Industry standards and IDEA best practices (a combination of industry standards best practices, customer feedback, IDEA expertise, etc.) are applied to data at the item level through an automated test involving value-based or measurable quality standards (e.g., special characters, URL extensions, packaging hierarchy totals, etc.).
  • Visual (Human) Check: A representative sample of those items that have passed the programmatic quality check are then subjected to a visual quality check, conducted quarterly by IDEA’s Data Quality team. They will evaluate each item in that sample for overall consistency, as well as numerous advanced considerations, such as image quality, packaging hierarchy logic, and product description verification. If that sample passes the visual check, all items that have passed the programmatic check will be considered “certified”.

Excellence is referred to in terms of a percentage and, like compliance, is measured at the item level. For example, if 600 out of 6,000 eligible SKUs in a manufacturer’s account have passed the required quality checks, that manufacturer account will have achieved 10% excellence.

To help manufacturers in the process of achieving excellence within the Data Certification Program, IDEA recently developed and released the IDW Excellence Module. This feature enables manufacturers to identify which of their items in the IDW are not meeting data quality standards.

From one central location, manufacturers can drill down into each of their eligible items, gaining more detailed insight that will help prioritize their efforts in the move toward excellence and, ultimately, certification.

Manufacturers with an IDW for Manufacturers subscription can access the IDW Excellence Module by using the following steps: Log in to the IDW > Advanced > Information > Data Certification > Excellence.

If you have any questions or would like to receive training for the IDW Excellence Module, please contact your Data Management Specialist. If you do not currently have an IDW for Manufacturers subscription and would like to learn more about what it includes, please contact Susan Streich at sstreich@idea4industry.com or Amy Brennan at abrennan@idea4industry.com.
