Get to Know Larry Stern: A Collaborative Leader Committed to Industry Progress

In our industry, innovation often comes from the collective efforts of many people. Larry Stern, president of Standard Electric Supply Co., has served not once—but twice—on IDEA’s Board. Why? Because he wants to help move the industry forward.

Championing Industry Collaboration

Motivated by the rise of e-commerce and the need for greater data standardization, Larry first joined the IDEA Board over two decades ago. He recognized that few companies could tackle these challenges alone.

“I wanted to be part of that solution, to help the organization fulfill its mission and become a true industry resource,” Larry said.

As the leader of Standard Electric Supply Co., a family-owned business serving customers since 1919, he saw firsthand how inconsistent data hindered efficiency and growth for distributors and manufacturers.

Driving Innovation and Efficiency

Larry, a strong supporter of IDEA’s mission to provide complete product content and develop data standards, emphasizes the importance of the Harmonized Data Model (HDM). He believes HDM is crucial for automation and reducing errors by enabling the industry to “speak the same language” through normalized data.

“Good, clean data is key to being successful,” he explains. “However, unless you have data standards and can help manufacturers and distributors implement those standards—through a tool like the Harmonized Data Model—it’s an impossible ask. Everything is going to be a one-off.”

By bringing his perspective as a distributor to the IDEA Board, he has helped develop tools and standards that make everyday operations smoother for companies across the industry.

Looking Ahead

Larry is committed to helping IDEA—and the industry—adapt and grow, especially with opportunities in artificial intelligence and automation.

“I see myself as an advocate,” he shares. “By working together and sharing our experiences, we can find solutions that benefit everyone.”

He highlights how new tools and capabilities, like volumetrics for distribution centers and product relationships for cross-references, provide even more value to the industry.

“Implementing new technology and automation on your own can be very difficult,” he says. “IDEA serves as a central resource to help us find these new capabilities.”
