IDEA was founded in 1998 by visionary members of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED). The Mission of IDEA Connector: Reinforcing Industry Standards
Central to our mission is IDEA Connector. Powered by direct manufacturer data, IDEA Connector addresses data reliability and syndication infrastructure hurdles, distinguishing it from other third-party entities. Through this platform, we’ve created a single source of truth for seamless worldwide data syndication with support for unlimited products and SKUs in global taxonomies.
We continually update IDEA Connector’s roadmap to stay abreast of changing data needs. With manufacturers, distributors, and trade association leaders on our Board of Directors, we have an intimate understanding of the challenges our industry is facing. Current initiatives, like the Harmonized Data Model (HDM), are evolving IDEA Connector into a next-generation data syndication platform.
Developed in collaboration with leaders and subject matter experts from the electrical industry, the HDM in IDEA Connector normalizes product attributes between different standards, allowing manufacturers to transmit data in their preferred format, syndicating it to distributors with consistent attribute labels. This reduces redundant data entry, minimizes product returns, and simplifies customer searches. The HDM enables manufacturers to meet varying distribution channel demands effortlessly and is a prime example of how IDEA proactively shapes the direction of the industry, sets new standards, and establishes best practices for others to follow.
The Mission of IDEA Exchange: Universal EDI Accessibility & Standards Setting
During our inception, IDEA focused on automating, standardizing, and optimizing business transactions, creating IDEA Exchange. This EDI value-added network (VAN) service provides equal access to EDI, reduces implementation costs, and streamlines processes. EDIPro, a framework based on ANSI X12 standards, outlines specifications for EDI transactions. By facilitating collaboration between manufacturers and distributors, IDEA developed a standardized subset of X12 documents, simplifying EDI implementation and reducing costs by enabling businesses to use a unified mapping structure.
In line with our commitment to minimizing EDI expenses, IDEA has also forged strategic partnerships with top VAN platform providers. Through these agreements, IDEA avoids the substantial infrastructure investment necessary for an independent VAN service. Instead, we procure EDI services in bulk from partners, ensuring advantageous pricing for our customers.
Apart from simply providing VAN EDI services, IDEA Exchange also has an internal team of experienced EDI specialists boasting decades of collective industry expertise. Our in-house proficiency facilitates agile adaptation to evolving channel demands, ensuring customized solutions aligned with our clients’ needs.
